PPL is paid at the national minimum wage rate and is taxable income.

Work Test Requirements

  • ✓ Worked at least 330 hours in 10 of the 13 months before birth
  • ✓ Approximately 1 day (7.6 hours) per week
  • ✓ Includes employment, self-employment, and paid leave
  • ✓ Can have gaps between qualifying months
  • ✓ Multiple jobs/employers count together

Income Test FY 2025-26

  • • Individual income limit: $175,788
  • • Based on adjusted taxable income
  • • Uses previous financial year income
  • • No family income test (abolished 2024)
  • • Includes salary, investments, rental income

Sharing PPL Between Parents

From July 2024, PPL is fully shareable between eligible parents. Key points:

  • Use-it-or-lose-it: Each parent has 2 weeks reserved that can't be transferred
  • Flexible scheduling: Take leave in blocks or days over first 2 years
  • Concurrent leave: Both parents can take PPL at the same time (up to 12 weeks together)
  • Equal access: Either parent can be the primary claimant
