Understanding Centrelink Payments in Australia
Centrelink (Services Australia) provides various income support payments to eligible Australians. The amount you receive depends on your payment type, personal circumstances, income, and assets.
Types of Payments
JobSeeker Payment
For people aged 22 to Age Pension age who are looking for work or unable to work due to illness. Requires mutual obligation requirements.
Age Pension
For Australians who have reached Age Pension age (67) and meet residence requirements. Subject to income and asset tests.
Youth Allowance
For young people aged 16-24 who are studying, doing an apprenticeship, or looking for work. Parental income may affect eligibility.
Parenting Payment
For parents or carers of young children. Single parents receive higher rates. Children must be under 8 (single) or under 6 (partnered).
Income and Asset Tests
Most Centrelink payments are subject to income and asset tests that reduce your payment as your income or assets increase:
- Income Test: Payments reduce by 50 cents for each dollar over the income free area
- Asset Test: Different limits apply for homeowners vs non-homeowners
- Deeming: Financial assets are "deemed" to earn income regardless of actual returns
Additional Supplements
You may also qualify for additional payments:
- Rent Assistance - up to $211.20/fortnight for eligible single renters (Mar 2026 indexation)
- Energy Supplement - $7.90-$14.10/fortnight depending on payment type
- Pharmaceutical Allowance - for concession card holders
- Telephone Allowance - for those with phone service
