Parents/guardians can apply for a child's TFN:

  • Online through myGov (if linked to ATO)
  • Paper application form
  • Child's birth certificate required
  • Useful for bank accounts and investment earnings

TFN Declaration Form

When you start a new job, your employer will ask you to complete a TFN Declaration Form. This tells your employer:

  • Your TFN
  • Whether to claim the tax-free threshold ($18,200)
  • If you have a HELP/HECS debt
  • If you want extra tax withheld

Key Decisions on the Form

Question What It Means Recommendation
Claim tax-free threshold? First $18,200 income is tax-free Yes, but only from ONE employer
HELP/HECS debt? Extra tax withheld for student loan Yes if you have a uni debt
Extra tax withheld? Withhold more tax each pay Consider if you have other income sources

Two Jobs? Important Tip

If you have multiple jobs, only claim the tax-free threshold from your main employer (the one where you earn the most). Claiming it from multiple employers will result in a tax debt at tax time.

What If You Don't Have a TFN?

You can legally work without a TFN, but there are significant financial consequences:

Employment Without TFN

Highest Tax Rate Applied

Without a TFN, your employer must withhold tax at the highest marginal rate (45%) plus Medicare levy (2%) = 47% tax on every dollar you earn.

Example on $1,000 weekly wage:

With TFN: ~$200 tax withheld = $800 take home

Without TFN: ~$470 tax withheld = $530 take home

You lose $270 per week!

Bank Interest Without TFN

If you don't provide your TFN to your bank, they'll withhold tax at 47% on any interest earned. On a savings account with $10,000 earning 4% interest ($400/year):

  • With TFN: Interest taxed at your marginal rate (possibly $0 if under tax-free threshold)
  • Without TFN: $188 withheld (47% of $400)

28-Day Grace Period

When you start a new job, you have 28 days to provide your TFN. During this period, your employer should withhold tax at normal rates if you've indicated you've applied for a TFN.

Protecting Your TFN

Your TFN is sensitive personal information. Protect it like you would your passport or bank details.
